Background information

Born and raised on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies, I survived almost three and a half years in Japanese captivity with my mother and little sister. Immediately following came two more years of war: the Bersiap, the fight for independence by the Indonesian nationals under leadership of President Soekarno. We survived those dangerous years as well.

Those early childhood years in captivity have given me great appreciation of freedom and joie de vivre for the rest of my life. I am thankful for every new day, for a wonderful husband, for family, for good health, for a roof over my head and food on the table, and, for Unites States Citizenship! I see the silver lining of every dark cloud. I am positive, like my mother, who not only protected her two little girls and survived, but lived to be a centenarian in good health as well. I love to read and write and swim and I could dance all night every night!

Media Appearances:

After publication of my first book In the Shadow of the Sun I appeared on Hawaiian Television and National Television in the Netherlands.

After publication of my second book Rising from the Shadow of the Sun Sandy Moss – KQNA/KPPV Radio Prescott, Arizona invited me twice for an interview on her Radio Show.

Speaking Topics:

I speak about the women and children’s camps during World War II in the Pacific; about the indecency of the Japanese government which has not offered a formal apology for their WWII atrocities, nor compensation to the victims of their war crimes; about Hawaiian customs and dance and the beauty of the underwater world in tropical oceans. I am a story teller!

Do you have any limitations on speaking engagements such as location?

I will speak anywhere for any groups or schools or churches that invite me; at this time basically in the Prescott area. I am not opposed to travel to other locations, as long as I get compensation for travel expenses.
